How to increase productivity
Do you ever feel like you are constantly busy and yet never seem to get anything done? As if no matter how hard you work there is always more to do and you never have any time off? Wouldn’t it be great if you could be one of those people who always seems to achieve loads of different things and still has time to do un-work/study related things? Well, here are six simple ways to help you increase your productivity…
Plan what you need to do in advance
If you sit down at your desk with no plan about what you are trying to achieve and aimlessly work on different things without ever finishing anything then the chances are you need a plan. Having a weekly plan or a to-do list can help with this. That way, when you sit down to work or study you will know exactly what you need to get done and so are far more likely to actually get it done.
Focus on one thing at a time
No matter how good you think you are at multitasking, if you are trying to check your emails, plan an essay, and tidy your revision notes all at once you are probably not going to do any of these tasks as effectively as if you did one at a time. This is because our brains are only able to cope with a limited amount of incoming information at once. So while doing two mundane tasks at once is probably fine, doing two tasks that require concentration is likely to slow you down or cause mistakes. As a result of this, it might be quicker and more productive to instead just focus on each task in turn.
Before you start working on a task make sure that anything that could distract you is removed so you can concentrate better. Close down any irrelevant internet tabs, turn your phone off or put it on silent, and make sure those around you know you are trying to concentrate. In addition, try to make sure you have everything you need before you start a task so you can’t get distracted when trying to find what you need. By doing this you will get everything done more quickly and effectively and will then have time to do other things.
If you find yourself spending ages on a task that could be done a lot quicker then racing yourself could be the answer. This involves setting a time limit on a particular task and aiming to get it done in that amount of time. By doing this you force yourself to work faster and are less likely to get distracted, making you more productive. I find it helpful to set the timer on my phone and keep it next me so I can see how much time I have left to complete each task.
Even if it seems tempting to work non-stop when you have loads to do, this may actually reduce productivity. Since concentration is limited, having a quick break may make you more productive when you start working again. However, the key here is a quick break, not one that lasts for hours so you end up not achieving anything. Give yourself a time limit to start working again and stick to it.
Once you have finished everything that you need to for the day, give yourself a reward. This motivates you to finish everything on your to-do list so you can have your reward.
